Eagles at Commanders predictions for Week 8 of the 2026 NFL season

Posted

The Eagles (2-5) are on the road to face the Commanders (1-4-1) on Sunday Night Football.

Let’s get to our predictions:

Reuben Frank (5-2)

The Commanders aren’t very good. They’ve won one game this year, they’re 19th in the league in offense and 25th in defense. Their best running back is averaging 3.8 yards per carry, their best wide receiver is out for the year, their quarterback hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass longer than 10 yards. They’ve already lost to two 2-5 teams, the Colts and Eagles, and they haven’t beaten anybody in a month. I’m not sure there’s a team I’d pick the Eagles to beat right now. Maybe the Dolphins. It’s not really about who they’re playing, it’s about them. They aren’t good at anything. They’re the only NFL team ranked 27th or worse on both offense and defense. They don’t make big plays on offense, they allow too many big plays on defense, they don’t tackle, they don’t pressure, they don’t stop the run, they don’t protect the quarterback, they don’t run the ball consistently and they’re bad on third down. They’re just a bad football team. Do the Eagles have more talent than the Commanders? Sure. I don’t think it’s close. It doesn’t matter.

Dave Zangaro (6-1)

The Eagles are heading to Washington this week to play a one-win Commanders team and are now 5 1/2-point underdogs! That’s how bad this season has gotten. The Eagles finally showed some signs of life on offense last week and then the defense totally fell apart. Good teams find ways to win and bad teams find ways to lose; the Eagles are a bad team. Could they go to Washington this weekend and pull out a win? Sure. The Commanders stink too and are without some key players like Terry McLaurin and Jacory Croskey-Merritt. But the Eagles are even more banged up and it can be tough to stop a losing streak like this one. It wouldn’t shock me if the Eagles win this game but I’m not picking it. Not after what I have seen the last few weeks. But maybe they can cover.

Barrett Brooks (4-3)

First things first, there is no way the defense plays as badly as they played last week against the Cowboys. Saquon Barkley set the tone early, allowing the offense to run the ball, which set up play action. Tanner McKee settled down in the offense using the quick game. You could see that Makai Lemon was comfortable being the first passing option.

The defense felt embarrassed by the poor performance we witnessed on Monday. The trenches were poor all around against the run and the pass. There was too much freelancing in jumping gaps and no gap discipline. Linebackers played slow in their reads and no one was ready to tackle. The Cowboys’ offense totally dominated us up front. They ran the ball right through the interior of the D-line. Monday’s performance was an anomaly and not the norm of what we can expect from this Vic Fangio defense.

Mike Mulhern (5-2)

We’ve seen teams spiral downward under Nick Sirianni and he’s sometimes powerless to stop it. After five straight losses and countless ways the season has been a disaster, Sunday night is setting up to be the final nail in the coffin of the Eagles 2026 season in front of another national audience.  The Commanders are heavily favored, desperate to save their season, and coming off their bye. There is almost no reason to think the Eagles will rebound. But for some strange reason I have a feeling they will.

The Eagles defense surely had their desire questioned after getting abused by the Cowboys. I expect them to bow up against a depleted Commanders offense. Washington is down Laremy Tunsil and Terry McLaurin for the season, plus top running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt is on IR. Jayden Daniels has been sacked 9 times in the last two games and a (finally?) healthy and motivated front should be able to get after him.

The Eagles offense looked a step beyond competent against Dallas, though that likely had a lot to do with the opponent. Seeing Saquon Barkley back on the practice field on Friday was a big boost. He’s going to try to power through his injuries again and this time he’ll carry the Eagles to a win.

Ashlyn Sullivan (5-2)

For two weeks in a row, the Eagles’ defense is the reason they lost the game. This matchup against the Commanders would typically be bad on bad – the Eagles offense vs Commanders defense. The Eagles’ offense showed promising signs last week, the only silver lining for this team. Saquon Barkley has no injury designation and I was encouraged with the way the Eagles tried to run the ball against the Cowboys. The biggest matchup against the Commanders is the Eagles defensive line vs Commanders run game. The Commanders have not been able to run the ball effectively outside of Jayden Daniels’ scrambles. I expect the Eagles defensive line to bounce back from their disappointing performance last week. More than anything, I am picking the Eagles to win this game because they can’t lose six games in a row… right?

Ryan Fowler (6-1)

A lot of the country won’t tune in to what many expect to be a snoozer on Sunday night, but make no mistake about it that this is a massive football game for both sides in primetime.

For the Eagles, it would be great to see a full workload for Saquon Barkley. He was electric on Monday night against Dallas in the first half, and I think he gets back to his ways this week against a Washington front that could be missing a few starters (Javon Kinlaw has already been ruled out.) Away from Barkley, there has to be a plan this week to counter Washington’s blitz-heavy defense. They send pressure at the second highest clip in football under DC Daronte Jones, and if the Eagles don’t have a plan to get the ball out of Tanner McKee’s hands, it’ll be a long night. This is a defense that gives up a ton of yards and points,  but they also take the ball away consistently to give their offense more possessions. Limiting turnovers will be huge.

Defensively, last week was an outlier. It has to be an outlier. It was a historically bad night, and I think Vic Fangio’s group comes ready to play in primetime. Overall, not that this isn’t an important game for the Eagles — it obviously is — but this is a potentially organizational altering game for Washington. Coming off of a bye, at home, in primetime, being frank, I think Washington HC Dan Quinn loses his job if they don’t win, and I think they are going to try and pull out all the stops to win in Week 8.
